Zoo's Ferret Sanctuary
Minksy & Dickies

On September 13th 2003, These two left their no pets apartment & came to join the family at Zoo`s. Their former owner, a college student, had rescued them, 11/2 years ago from someone else. She loves them very much, & wants to be sure they will stay safely here with us. She wants to visit them from time to time, and keep in touch. Dickies has some health issues, and we have promised to keep her informed as to how he is doing. Dickies is about six years old. We think Minksy is about five.
The pictures below were taken a week after the boys joined us.They are being held by their former owner, Lissa, who came back to do some much needed volunteer work.

Update:  March 9th 2004

Dickies had surgery today. He has had major issues since he came to us. His hind legs aren`t right, he doesn`t seem to know when he potties, and he has an unspeakable odor about him. The vet believes this is adrenal gland related, so today, Dickies went in for surgery. However, the adrenal glands didn`t appear to be grossly enlarged. There was a problem with his spleen, which was removed & sent to the lab. Dickies has a RAGING bladder infection. Bloodwork was also done, but isn`t back yet. Still no answers...

UPDATE: April 4th, 2004

Dickies never fully recovered from his surgery. He went rapidly downhill. He became totally unable to walk--and he cried out in pain when he paddled his little legs... Four vets, and  over $1000---and we couldn`t help Dickies. He was so sweet. It`s over now.

The lab report showed the spleen had suffered brutal trauma at one time. I don`t believe this was under Lissa`s care--but rather done to him by the owner Lissa had taken him from. I am appauled at the way some people treat little animals. It`s too late to help Dickies--but I want answers. WHY was this happening to him?

UPDATE: April 9, 2004

Well, I have my answer. It`s not a pretty one. The quality of Dickie`s life was robbed from him by some nasty human. The spleen had shown horrible trauma injury--the necropsy showed an atonic bladder. He probably suffered a spinal cord injury, while being brutally beaten. As a result, he couldn`t walk--all he could do was "paddle" He never had the urge to "go potty" The bladder just filled & filled, until it leaked everywhere. It held old, stagnant urine, because he could not empty it. Thus, a raging infection--and the terrible odor. This was not Dickie`s fault at all. Some terrible person really hurt him. He was broken. My poor, sweet boy. I am ashamed to be a part of the human race, sometimes...
