Zoo's Ferret Sanctuary
Sandy

February 3, 2004:

We got a call from Maple Park today.

A couple was rehabbing a house in DeKalb. They were working in the basement, where the last people had left all kinds of junk. Among other things, there was an old cage on the floor, with the door open, and an empty water bottle inside. Across the room, there was a ripped-open bag of rolled oats. The woman was talking to her daughter, when a weak, dehydrated ferret dragged himself out from behind some boxes...God knows how long he had been all alone, in that basement.

Small world--This woman rescues cats, and knew some of the same people we have spoken with at H.E.L.P. organization!!! I offered to give her a crash course on ferret care, if she would like to keep him---but she already has MANY assorted animals, as well as some foster cats. She wanted to bring him to us.

He got fluids right away. He`s still very weak, but he`s eating & drinking. We will know more in the next few days. It`s a waiting game, He is a sandy colored (deaf) blaze boy, about 4-5 years old---very thin.Very dirty. He`s in a hospital cage in the kitchen.

How could someone have done that to him? I`ll never understand that type of mentality.

The woman, her daughter, and her grandson then got a tour of our sanctuary. (The grandson is the same age as OUR grandson!) I walked them around & shared many of our babies` stories. The (human) baby was very well-behaved. (Mommy has trained him well, with the cats!)

We had a wonderful visit, and as she was leaving, she said "Oh I feel SO much better, knowing he will be in good hands!!"

I would appreciate some prayers/good thoughts for Sandy. He seems better, but he`s not out of the woods yet.

Picture coming soon!

Sandy in March of 2005

UPDATE: March 31, 2005

WOW---Sandy has been with us for over a year, already!  We quickly discovered he is deaf, as are so many of the blaze ferrets.

He responded well to proper nutrition, lots of special attention, & love. He chose the Merry group, last year. They all get along famously!

Sandy has insulinoma, & is on meds for life. That doesn`t stop him from eating, drinking, playing, & having fun. He is a wonderful, wonderful boy.

More later!

UPDATE: September 26, 2006

Sandy continues to do well on his meds. He lives with what`s left of the Merry group. (Merry group was formed, years ago--and most have gone now. They are a slower, older group, who goes back to the cage sooner than most of the others....) I just love this cuddly old deaf boy!!! Not a mean bone in his body. He is so sweet...

More later.
